Cedric Haynes Visit

Cedric Haynes Visit
Posted on 03/07/2018

We were very fortunate here at All Saints Catholic School to have broadcast meteorologist, Cedric Haynes of KWQC TV 6 News, visit our middle school science classrooms.  His visit was intended to educate students on a number of weather related topics and give insight to careers in meteorology.  Cedric’s outgoing personality, multitude of experience from working in different climates around the United States, and knowledge of all things weather made this visit a very special, and most importantly, educational one.

Cedric spoke with two, sixth grade classes and two, eighth grade classes, with each discussion focusing on varying topics.  The sixth grade participated in discussing a number of topics including the water cycle, how to prepare for severe weather, the 4 main types of precipitation, and forecasting the weather. Students were given opportunities to forecast the weather based on models featuring high and lower pressure weather systems.  The eighth grade classes participated in discussions about careers in broadcast meteorology.  Cedric shared with the students the workings of the news station, his experiences in broadcasting live and on scene in severe weather situations, scholarship opportunities, and the paths one needs to take to pursue a career in meteorology. Students were able to ask questions and share what they had learned live on the air. Several students even got an opportunity to share the upcoming weather forecast live on the air. By giving students opportunities to listen to and speak with professionals in science-based careers, we are opening pathways for them they might not have ever thought about before.
